Peter was born in Bisti, San Juan County, the son of David Charlie of Kirland NM and Nah Clih Yea Tab Yih Bah Charlie who predeceased her son, the dear brother of Rita M. Charlie of Farmington NM. Peter enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 22 1969 in Farmington NM and arrived in Vietnam on February 25 1970 where he was assigned for duty with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Company B was under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 2dt Battalion when a unit was sent out to a prearranged ambush site in the vicinity of the Viem Dong village complex in the Hieu Nhon District of Quang Nam Province. Shortly after midnight, on August 8, volleys of grenades were thrown into the position with the enemy slipping away into the darkness. Two men were wounded and evacuated; LCpl Charlie was killed from the fragmentation wounds he had sustained
