Professional Football Player. His monumental accomplishments while playing at the University of Michigan, nearly earned him the Heisman Trophy in 1947. Raised in Toledo, Ohio, where he attended Thomas DeVilbiss High School, he enrolled at Michigan and initiated his illustrious football career with the Wolverines, when World War II intervened. He served as a gunner aboard a B-25 with the US Army Air Corps and during the course of the war along with his crew, he received a citation for sinking an enemy vessel. In the closing months of the war, he was shot down and until the war's conclusion, he was protected from the Germans by an Italian family who sympathized with the Allies. Upon returning to Michigan, he achieved All-American status and led the Big Ten in total offense two-times. In 1947 (playing at the quarterback and halfback positions), he led the Wolverines' squad nicknamed "The Mad Magicians" to a perfect 10 and 0 season which culminated with a 49 to 0 victory over Southern California in the Rose Bowl played on January 1, 1948. Chappuis took home MVP honors for his efforts in the contest. He finished second in voting for the Heisman Trophy behind Johnny Lujack of Notre Dame. He transcended football with his accomplishments as he earned the distinction of appearing on the cover of Time Magazine in 1947. Selected by the Detroit Lions during the 5th round of the 1947 NFL Draft, he ended up playing professionally with the Brooklyn Dodgers of All-America Football Conference and played for them during the 1948 season. He retired from football after spending the 1949 season with the Chicago Rockets. He went onto become a successful business executive and served as a labor relations director. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 and named to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. (bio by: C.S.)
