Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Chapman
(October 26, 1925 - September 11, 2009)
Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Chapman, 83, of Atchison, Kansas passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009.
Betty was born October 26, 1925 in Engals, OK, the daughter of Dan and Letha May Davis Matthews, the older of two children. She attended grade school in Harden, OK, graduated from McLish High School in Fittstown, OK, and attended the East Central University in Ada, OK. Betty was a homemaker after her marriage in 1949, raising five children, while also working a variety of medical administration jobs in both Ada and later in Orlando, OK. She served as a nurse's aide at the Valley View Hospital in Ada, OK (1960 - 1966) and at the Alverno Heights Hospital in Guthrie, OK (1966 - 1969). After Betty and her family moved to Atchison in 1969, she was employed by the Atchison Hospital (1969 - 1982) years, and subsequently for the Medicalodge of Atchison before finally retiring in 1990. For the next eight years, she volunteered as a caretaker, doing "senior sitting" for a variety of Atchison residents. Betty moved to Guthrie, OK in 1998, to be close to her daughter, and returned to Atchison in 2005, residing at Medicalodge of Atchison. Betty was a Christian woman, attending the First Christian Church in Atchison, KS and in Guthrie, OK. She loved babies, enjoyed working on the maternity ward, and was always a participant in the circle of life. Her family and friends were important to her, and all who met her knew that she loved animals, and loved to talk about her pets. Betty enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and reading, and it was always Betty's desire that you "keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart"!
The family would like to thank the staff at Medicalodge of Atchison for their loving and dedicated care.
Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Chapman is survived by three daughters, Deborah Sue Chapman-Scribner, Ft. Smith, AR, Dana Elizabeth Chapman-Peters, Gladstone, MO, Ann Raquel Chapman-Huntington, Atchison, KS, two sons, Randall Jack Chapman, Alexandria, VA, Gregory Keith Chapman, Littleton, CO, eleven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and a great-grandson anticipated in October 2009.
