He was born on Ladys Island, South Carolina. When the War Between the States begin, at the age of 16, he came to Savannah from his home on Piney Island, South Carolina to enlist in the Confederate Army. He was told he was too young, and he should return home. Instead he joined the Savannah Cadets, which was founded in 1861 by his future father-in-law, Captain Richard Dennis Millen. After serving in the Savannah Cadets for a time, he went to Beaufort, South Carolina where he enlisted in the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery. He was a canoneer.

On March 11 1883 he married Tullulah "Lou" Millen in the Church of the Cross Episcopal Church in Blufton,South Carolina. They raised 6 children on Daufuskie Island, where Capn. Jim had some acreage and also a permit to harvest oysters commercially.

In 1917 he was kicked in the chest by a horse that was eating Lou's prized roses. After that they moved to Savannah and lived out their lives
