Parents David & Lucreita Graves Chapin

Was a mechanic/engineer by trade and worked in his early days for Moses Dillenbeck in Herkimer County, New York

Enlisted on 22 July 1862 at German Flats, Herkimer County, New York into the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry, also known as Upton's Regulars. On 23 August 1862 he was mustered in as a private into Capt. Irving Holcomb's Company B.

Saw some limited action at Antietan and was in the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Wintered with the regiment across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg at White Oak Church. Participated in the famous "Burnside Mud March" in January 1863. On 3 May 1863 orders were issued to take Fredericksburg and go onto Chancellorsville to link up with Gen. Hookers main force. Was one of the lucky ones that day, as the 121st was greatly beat up at Salem Church a few miles south of Fredericksburg. Saw action in the other battles the 121st participated in, such as Gettysburg, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania.

Mustered out with the regiment on 25 June 1865 at Hall's Hill, Virginia near Alexandria.

Married Samantha Jane Emmons from Wilmington, Essex County, New York and moved west to Kalamzoo
