GENESEO - Gertrude L. Chanler, 85, died Dec. 17, 1999 at her home.

She was born Gertrude Laughlin in London, England to American diplomat Irwin Boyle Laughlin and Therese Iselin Laughlin on Dec. 11, 1914. At the end of the war, Mr. Laughlin retired from the government returning with his family to the United States to build his home, Meridian House in Washington, DC.

He was recalled to diplomatic service, moving his family to Athens, Greece, and then to Spain, a U.S. Ambassador under President Hoover. Ambassador Laughlin retired permanently from government service at the close of the Hoover Administration, returning with his family to their home in Washington.

Two years later, her younger brother Alexander Laughlin died of pneumonia. In 1937 she married Lt. Commander Hubert W. Chanler, USN, of Geneseo.

Mrs. Chanler was widely known as a philanthropist, community activist, supported of the arts, preservationist and conservationist. She was a long-time supporter of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Genesee Valley chapter of the Red Cross, SUNY Geneseo, the Association for the Preservation of Geneseo, the Genesee Valley Conservancy, the Catholic Church, the Neuman Center at SUNY Geneseo, and numerous other organizations.

She is survived by her eight children, Elizabeth Chatwin of Oxrfordshire, England, John (Sheila) Chanler of Geneseo, Adrian (Sue) Chanler of Charleston, SC, Oliver Chanler of Genseo, Alexander (Carole) Chanler of Andover, MA, Felicity Young of Lenox, MA, Gay Chanler and Alida (Dan) Dieder both of Flagstaff, AZ; 13 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband R. Admiral Hubert W. Chanler in 1974, and 1 brother, Alexander Laughlin in 1935.

Friends called Monay at Fallbrook House, Geneseo. Private funeral services were conducted Tuesday at the Fallbrook House Chapel. Burial St. Mary's Cemetery, Geneseo. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of individual choice.
