Shreveport, LA - Born on a frosty morning December 8, 1918 in the woods of Grant Parish, Louisiana in a house constructed by her father's own hands and child number 9 of the marriage between, James Edward Chandler and Harriett Price Chandler, Ava Chandler Burnett outlived her parents, her 8 siblings, her husband, Verne, and her son Tommy. Known since childhood as "Peaches" she died peacefully March 11, 2010 in the Shreveport home where she and Verne retired with Jimmy & Vickey at her side.
Ava met Verne Burnett in Monroe, Louisiana where they both worked for Southern Bell Telephone. Their September 19, 1940 marriage was followed by the birth of Jimmy in 1943 and Tommy in 1945.
Moving frequently from town to town in Louisiana as Verne's career with Southern Bell Telephone progressed, Verne, Ava and their two boys lived in Monroe, Ruston, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Shreveport and then on to Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi. Verne Burnett predeceased her April 1, 1988 and son Thomas Edward Burnett followed on November 28, 1998.
Ava spent most of her life caring for others; Verne and her sons Jimmy & Tommy, her mother, Verne's mother Ada, Jimmy's first wife, Carolyn, and from time to time, her three grandchildren. She is survived by her son James A. Burnett and his wife Vickey Burnett of Shreveport. She is also survived by grandson Charles Burnett and wife Heidi, of Colorado Springs, CO; granddaughter Susan Burnett Hitt and husband David of Atlanta, GA, grandson Ted Burnett, of Daphne, AL. and 5 great grandchildren: Ashlyn and Parker Burnett; Emily, Joshua, and Austin Hitt. A number of nieces and nephews from her 8 siblings survive along with several dear friends who were faithful to visit Ava regularly in her later years.
Following Verne's retirement, Ava and Verne continued their life long active participation in their church, traveled, raised vegetables in their garden, played bridge, read and spent time with family. After Verne's death, Ava continued her participation in Questers Antique Club and water aerobics. At age 84, she used her computer to compose a short history of her life, added photos and copies of family records, bound it and gave a copy to each of her grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Habitat for Humanity, a passion of Peaches' son, Tommy or Broadmoor United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be at 11:30 am – 1 pm Monday, March 15 at Osborn Funeral Home in Shreveport, LA. A service conducted by Ava's nephew David Ketchand, of Lake Jackson, Texas, will follow at 1 pm at Osborn. Burial will be at Forest Park on St. Vincent in Shreveport.
