Joe W. Chambers, 80 of Abernathy, passed away Oct. 3, at University Medical Center after a short illness. He was born February 15, 1929 at Alamo, Texas, to Charles and Minnie Chambers. He graduated from Landig College of Mortuary Science in 1948 and received his funeral directors license in 1950. He served with the 45th division of the Oklahoma National Guard during the Korean War, and later graduated from Baylor University in 1957.

He was married to the former Amberdeen Randolph on September 20, 1953 at Andrews. They moved to Abernathy in 1959, and operated Chambers Funeral home for the next 32 years, retiring in 1991. After his retirement he enjoyed traveling in their RV and hunting and fishing. He was a member of the First Baptist Church , IOOF Lodge, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, and served as a City Councilman and trustee of the Abernathy Cemetery Association.

Memorial services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Abernathy.

He is survived by his wife, Amber; two sons, Buster of Abernathy and Charles of Abernathy; two daughters, Dorothy Rook of Lubbock; Guyden Uzor of Lubbock; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
