Nancy L. Chambers
May 10, 1922 - February 4, 2015

Nancy Laura Chambers, age 92, met her Creator on Wednesday, February 4th, 2015.

She died in the comfort of her home in Temple, surrounded by three loving daughters who were her caretakers for the last three years of her life.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7th at 10:00 a.m. at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with the Reverend Ridge Adams officiating.

Burial will be in Chambers Cemetery in Palestine, Texas at 4:00 p.m.

Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, February 6th from 6-8pm at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Memorial Baptist Church of Temple, 6161 South 5th, Temple, Texas 76502; Cultural Activities Center of Temple, 3011 North 3rd Street, Temple, TX 76501 in memory of Nancy L. and Robert J. Chambers, or the Achievement Center of Texas, 2950 North Shiloh Road, Garland, Texas 75044 in lieu of flowers.

Nancy Laura Weems Chambers was born on May 10,1922 in the home of her parents, Marvin Monroe and Julia Florence Holmes Weems, in the small East Texas farming community of Tennessee Colony.

She was one of ten children and was the last surviving member of her birth family.

She and her siblings grew up on their parents’ farm and from an early age were taught the disciplines of hard work and frugality.

She worked in the fields picking cotton alongside her father and learned domestic skills from her mother.

She was a good student who graduated from Cayuga High School in 1940 as the salutatorian of her class.

She completed secretarial training at Nixon Business College in Palestine in 1941.

On June 5,1942 she married Ecta Chambers of Palestine and they began a family that came to include five children.

The family moved to Temple in 1952 and put down roots.

She was a stay at home mom and homemaker for many years.

In 1967, Nancy began full time employment and held several positions, including Office Manager/Bookkeeper for Webb’s Drugstore, Executive Secretary and Office Manager for the United Way of Temple and Office Manager for Service Merchandise.

She ended her career with secretarial work on a part-time basis at Texell Credit Union.

Her home was the site for countless family gatherings, including those for holidays and for special reunions with her extended family.

Nancy was a faithful member of Memorial Baptist Church for over 60 years and was active in her Sunday school class, where she formed treasured friendships.

She had a lifelong, unwavering faith in God that provided support and encouragement for her through many hardships and that accompanied her on her final journey.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ecta and by her two beloved sons, Charles E. Chambers of Dallas and Robert J. Chambers of Temple.

She lives on in the hearts of her daughters, Donna Plank of Temple, Martha Baugh and her husband, Carl of Glen Rose and Janette Chambers of Temple.

Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Marcus Chambers of Plano, Margo Chambers of Dallas, Matthew DeFord and his wife, Micaela of Rockwall, James Plank of Austin, Ben Plank and his wife, Michelle of Temple and Dr. Laura Watts and her husband, Dr. Jon Watts of Kernersville, North Carolina.

Her great-grandchildren who will miss their G.G. are Sterling, Jackson, Hudson, Jacob, Aidan and Riley. Other family members include one daughter-in-law, Rona Chambers of Dallas, one sister-in-law, Joanne Weems of Pasadena and numerous nieces and nephews.
