Funeral services for Thomas Peter Chaires, Sr., age 88, of Old Town, Florida, were held Tuesday, May 22, at 3:00 p.m. at the Old Town Methodist Church with the Rev. Carson Howes officiating. Burial was in the Old Town Cememtery.
Mr. Chaires died Monday, May 21, 1962 at the University of Florida Medical Center in Gainesville after a lingering illness. He was born October 11, 1874 in Lafayette Co (now Dixie Co.) Florida.
He was a lifelong member of the Old Town Methodist Church, which he helped to organize. He served Old Town as a member of the Board of Trustees of both Dixie and Lafayette County Schools. He also served as a County Commissioner both before and after Dixie County was formed from Lafayette in 1921. He was a pioneer farmer and cattleman, and his family moved to this area after the Civil War.
He was the son of the late Thomas Peter Chaires and Clara F. McQueen. He is survived by his widow Mrs. Pearl Davis Henderson Chaires; two daughters, Mrs. Ira Landry of Perry and Mrs. W. J. (Sue) Boynton of Tallahassee; two sons, Dr. Thomas P. Chaires, Jr., Bradenton, and State Representative Hal Martin Chaires, Sr., Old Town; a brother, Green Cottrell Chaires, Old Town; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Grandsons Elza Landry, Thomas P. Chaires 111, Jay Boynton, Thomas S. Chaires, Mac Landry and Ben Boynton served as pallbearers.
