Mr. Chaffin was president of the Northwestern Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association in 1930-1940 , a former state deputy fire marshal, founder of The Print Shoppe, 423 Clinton St., and former proprietor of the New Bradford Restaurant, now Gustavsen's Restaurant, 319 Clinton St.
He also was a past chairman of the Defiance county Democratic committee; a member of the Defiance Elks, Eagles, and St. Paul's Methodist Church; was secretary for six years of the Adrian Elks; and was a member of the Adrian Club and the Lenawee Country Club.
Mr. Chaffin was born on Dec. 10, 1890 in Louisa, Kentucky. His parents were the late Ransom S. and Colista (Burton) Chaffin.
While attending Valparaiso University, he worked summers as a linotype operator at the Defiance Crescent-News and later full-time. He established the Print Shoppe in 1915 an then was proprietor of the New Bradford Restaurant from 1922 to 1930.
From 1930 to 1938, he was deputy state fire marshal having served under Govs. George White and Martin L. Davey.
He then went to Adrian where he was a linotype operator for 24 years with the Adrian Telegram, until becoming incapacitated because of his health.
He is survived by his wife, the former Luella M. Smith to whom he was married in Defiance on June 24, 1913; a son, Brad W. Jr., Evansville, In.; a daughter, Mrs. Harold W. (Anne) Palmer, 503 North Clinton St., and two grandchildren, Jack and Patricia Palmer, Defiance. A sister preceded him in death.
Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
