Betty Marilyn Jayne Chaffee, 76, formerly of East Towanda, Pa., passed away Thursday evening, Feb. 21, 2008, at the Schmeckenbecher Personal Care Home in Towanda Township, Pa.
Born and raised in Camptown, Pa., on April 27, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Fred Jayne and Susie Waterman Jayne.
Betty attended and was a graduate of Wyalusing High School and later graduated from the Ridley Lowell Business School in Binghamton, N.Y.
On May 18, 1952, she married Donald Chaffee in Binghamton.
In early years, Betty worked as a waitress for Mike Haight at the Indian Trail Restaurant in North Towanda. She was a member of the Indian Trail bowling team and enjoyed many years of bowling. Betty later became employed by Grace Manley in the Prothonotary's Office of the Bradford County Courthouse in Towanda and subsequently served as deputy prothonotary for a number of years. Betty retired from her working career from the Farm Credit Bureau, which was formerly located in Wysox.
Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Towanda and especially enjoyed her affiliation with the Critchlow Class there. Active in local politics for many years, she was a member of the Bradford County Republican Women.
When not working, Betty enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, traveling and spending time with her family. She fought a long and courageous 30-year battle against Parkinson's disease. Her passing has given her the final victory.
She is survived by: her children and their spouses, Judith and James Isaac of Towanda, David and Kathy Chaffee of Frisco, Texas, and Barbara and Patrick McGuire of Towanda; her grandchildren, Katie and Rich Franklin of Webster, N.Y., Jennifer Isaac of Towanda, Ryan Isaac of Towanda, Casey Ryan of Towanda, Ethan Chaffee of Frisco and Aaron Chaffee of Frisco; two great-granddaughters, Lauryn and Haley; two sisters, Nancy Bennett and her husband, Richard Bennett, of Spring Hill, Pa., and Ruth Irvine and her husband, Sid Irvine of Salina, Utah; three brothers, Clarence Jayne of Mesa, Ariz., Galen Jayne and his wife, Athalie, of Kingman, Ariz., and Robert Jayne and his wife, Joan, of Sun City Center, Fla.; her sisters-in-law, Scotty Chaffee of State College, Pa., and Betty Bowen of Winchester, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by her loving and devoted caregiver for the past two years, Julie Schmeckenbecher, and her family of Towanda.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Chaffee, on March 22, 1992, and by her brother, Bowen Jayne.
The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Richard Barner, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Towanda, officiating.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family in the Camptown Cemetery, Camptown, Pa.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
