From staff and wire reports
CHAUVIN - State Sen. Leonard Chabert, a member of the Louisiana Legislature for more than 20 years, died Thursday night at his home after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 58.

Chabert decided in August not to seek re-election to the senate because of his illness.
"I have battled cancer for the last three years," he said in August. "I had hoped that after seeking treatment from three of the finest medical facilities in the country that by now I could be fully recovered and be able to give my total energy to continuing to serve as senator. That is not the case."
Chabert died at his home at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, said Marty Chabert, one of his three sons. The Senate's president pro tern, Chabert was active through the 1991 session in spite of his three-year fight against cancer.
He had been confined to bed for the past several months, the younger Chabert said.
"He was particularly proud of fighting for the poor and the elderly," Marty Chabert said.
Among other things, he said Chabert also championed the South Louisiana Medical Center in Houma, whose management operations served as a model for the state's charity hospital system.

"(Chabert's) death is a great loss to me personally, because he was agood friend," Robichaux said. "It will also be a great loss to his district and the people of Lockport. He's done a lot for the people of Lockport as far as drainage, streets and a multi-complex building."
"He will be sorely missed," Rep. Jessie Guidry said. "He was a good friend to me and especially to the elderly and people in need. He will be very missed in the halls of Baton Rouge. My sympathy goes out to his family."
Chabert, a crawfish farmer and seafood dealer, was a state representative from 1972 to 1980 and a senator since 1980.
A graduate of Cut Off High School and Nichols State University, Chabert also served as a justice of the peace and as a member of the Terrebonne Parish School Board, prior to his election to the Louisiana House of Representatives.
