Claude Tillman Center, 86, of Duncan, SC, passed away December 1, 2011 in the home he built for his family. He had also been a longtime resident of Verdery, SC.
He is survived by his wife and lifetime sweetheart Elizabeth Francis (Newman) Center of 63 years and was the son of the late Gonzalee Center and Irene (Wade) Center.
He was a member of the Duncan First Baptist Church and was a mason and former member of the Duncan Masonic Lodge #309. He was an avid sports fan and was a talented catcher and power hitter for the local textile teams. He was retired from Steel Heddle in Greenville and was veteran of the US Navy and WWII.
Survivors also include a son, Claude Donald Center; a daughter, Shirley Clopton; two sisters, Wilma Lambert and Dorothy Arms all of Duncan; a grandson, Carl Ansel Schuff II; three great granddaughters, Logan Elizabeth Schuff, Ansley Gail Belmont and Eleanor Elle Francis Schuff; and special friends, Lisa Humphries and children, Maverick, Shelby and Janice Westmoreland. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann Lambert.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 AM Monday, December 5, 2011 at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens with Pastor Lamar McAbee officiating. The family received friends from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the home of the daughter Shirley Clopton, 124 Greer Street, Duncan.
