Greenville County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Feb. 16, 1951
Greenville County
South Carolina, USA

Kindness is the daughter of James Alexander Center and Mary Jane Ballew. She was born and reared in Highland Township in upper Greenville County and is a sister to Macilda "Sildy" Center Barnett, John M Center, William Perry "Bill" Center and Sarah "Sally" Emma Center Phillips.

Kindness married Joseph Leighton Ballenger and they are the parents of twelve children: Elizabeth "Bessie" Ann Ballenger King, Jess Jane Ballenger Bowen Goodman, John James Ballenger, Macilda "Sildy" Essie Ballenger Biggers, Texas "Tessie" Ballenger, Cordelia "Cordie" Lillian Ballenger Williams, Zebulon Vance Ballenger, Horace Edward Ballenger, Rufus Rex Ballenger, Sarah "Sallie" Ophelia Ballenger DeYoung, Edna Cue Ballenger Henderson Hawkins and Joseph Leighton Ballenger, Jr. Zebulon Vance would die in infancy. Tessie died at age 14.

Kindness was an excellent cook and housekeeper. Her husband, Leighton, worked in law enforcement for much of his life and died in 1930. Kindness then moved into the home of her eldest daughter, Bessie as both were now widows and she spent the last twenty years of her life with Bessie and granddaughters, Johannah and Anne King. She taught them to cook, sew, keep house, garden, keep chickens, knit and crochet. While she kept house and tended to the girls when they were home from school Bessie was able to provide the household income and put both of her daughters through Furman University.

Kindness was a member of City View Baptist Church and her daughter, Bessie, and her granddaughters attended First Baptist in Greenville. In her later years Kindness had diabetes. When she passed away she had 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. There are now many more great grandchildren.
