ROCKPORT – Frederick R. Cavanaugh, 84, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at Shore Village Nursing Center, Rockland. Born in Rockport, April 26, 1920, he was one of ten children of Charles A. and Harriett Boultbee Cavanaugh. He attended local schools. After graduating from Rockport High School, he enlisted into the United States Army, May 21, 1938. He attained the rank of Sergeant with Battery "E" 240th Coast Artillery and on May 23, 1941, was discharged from active duty. November 11, 1941 he married Helen Eleanor Hakko at Paxton, Massachusetts.
July 15th, 1942, Mr. Cavanaugh re-enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served the next four years as a Sergeant with the 45th Infantry Division. He served in the African, European Theaters and was involved in the liberation of Rome. Wounded in several battles, he was a recipient of The Purple Heart as well as many other service awards. Discharged from active duty June 23, 1945, he returned to Rockport and to his family which now included his first daughter whom he had never met.
From 1951 to 1955, he lived with his family in Panama, where he worked as a Civil Service Plumber, serving U.S. Canal Zone employees. After returning to his Rockport home in 1955, Mr. Cavanaugh continued his work in plumbing & heating. He worked on several Maine projects including Sugarloaf Resort and Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. His expertise in plumbing and heating, was sought by many local residents. He particularly enjoyed mentoring new plumbers as they apprenticed.
He was proud to be a descendant of Thomas Rogers and thus was a member of the Mayflower Society.
After the death of his beloved wife October 27, 1998, Mr. Cavanaugh's heart-break was evident yet he kept a keen mind and was an inspiration to many.
Other than his wife, Mr. Cavanaugh was pre-deceased by a daughter, Gloria Jean Cavanaugh in 1978. He is survived by three daughters, H. Marie Brewer and her husband Robert of Portland, Mary Lou Cavanaugh and her husband William Grusik of Union, Kelly Ann Cavanaugh of Houlton; one brother Charles Cavanaugh and his wife Joan of Round Rock, TX; a sister Marion Salminen of West Rockport; two grandchildren Christopher Brewer and his wife Debbie, Suzanne Brewer and her partner Don Archibald all of Portland; three great grandchildren Kate, Alex and Andrew Brewer as well as several nieces and nephews.
Interment will be in West Rockport Cemetery. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
