Dorothy Marie (Cavanaugh) Abers was born on October 5, 1933 in San Francisco, CA to Walter and Irene (Wolff) Cavanaugh. She graduated from Balboa High School in San Francisco where she competed on the swim team. Dorothy met Norman while he was stationed at Fort Ord in CA.
On June 16, 1951, Dorothy was united in marriage to Norman Abers in San Francisco, CA. The couple lived in San Francisco for a year and a half before moving to Norman's hometown of Osakis. The couple was blessed with seven children. Dorothy was a homemaker until 1971 when she started nurses training in Alexandria Technical College. After graduating from nursing school she worked at Osakis Nursing Home for 25 years until she retired. She then moved to Alexandria in 1998. Dorothy was a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary in Osakis and First Lutheran Church in Alexandria.
Dorothy enjoyed traveling, going to the casino, knitting, watching the Minnesota Twins, game shows, and John Wayne, Shirley Temple and Sandra Bullock movies, collecting music boxes and crocheting and baking cookies to keep the cookie jar full for the grandchildren.
Dorothy died on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at Knute Nelson in Alexandria at the age of 77.
She is survived by hers sons, Rick (Marie) Abers of Amarillo, TX, Randy (Sue) Abers of Brandon; daughters, Linda (Kevin) Pollard of Kensington, Loreen Rowe of Canyon, TX, Lydia (Donald) Stewart of Edmond, Oklahoma, Lois (Brad) Andrist of Garfield; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis Cavanaugh of Edmond, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Irene; husband, Norman; son; Raymond Abers; and brother, Donald Cavanaugh.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Anderson Funeral Home with Reverend Marilee Bergerson officiating. Music was provided by organist, Randy Morken and soloists, Brad Larson and Angela Wegner. Honorary urn bearers were Dorothy's grandchildren.
Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, Minnesota.
