Thorndike – Word was received here Friday of the death of a native and long time resident of this town. Guss L. Cates of 879 Congress Avenue, Portland, who had been prominent in Masonic activities throughout the state for many years, died unexpectedly at his home Thursday noon. He was 78 years old.
Born February 14, 1881 here, he was the son of Fred and Jennie L. (Knowles) Cates and received his education in local schools. He had been a resident of this town nearly all his life until moving to Portland in October 1945.
Cates was a 50-year member of the Unity Lodge of Masons, a life member of Anah Temple, Bangor, and also belonged to the Palestine Commandery, Belfast, the Maine Consistory, Portland, the Order of Eastern Star and Harvest Moon Grange, both of this town.
Surviving are his widow, Emma, to whom he had been married over 50 years; a daughter, Mrs. Maxine Caldwell of Nyack, N.Y.; a son, Frederick of N.J.; a brother, James of this town; a niece; a nephew; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held here at a time and place to be announced later.
