Henrietta Castlebury Auman
1915 2003

HILLSBOROUGH -- Henrietta Castlebury Auman died at her home in Hillsborough Wednesday afternoon.
She was born in Raleigh, the daughter of Muriel Victor and Dr. Frank Castlebury. She grew up in a close and loving family of Castleburys, Brantleys, and Laytons. She graduated from Cary High School and Meredith College.
She taught one year in Duplin County and then moved to Hillsborough in 1937 to teach Home Economics. There she met and married Coach D. Glenn Auman, a native of Moore County. They made their home in Hillsborough, where they were loving and active parents for their daughters, Vicky and Catherine and later grandparents for Tom, Christine, and Carolyn. Both were devoted Christians and enjoyed many years of worship, service and leadership in the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church.
In a 30-year career in the Orange County Schools, Mrs. Auman taught hundreds of young women the arts of homemaking. She particularly enjoyed visiting the homes of many of her students and always loved to see them after they graduated. Both Mr. and Mrs. Auman retired in 1975.
She enjoyed participating in many church and community activities. She volunteered over 25 years at the VA Hospital in Durham. In 1999, she was recognized by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for her thousands of hours of volunteer service at the VA.
She was active in and held leadership positions in the Davie Poplar Chapter of the DAR, Orange County Historical Museum, Hillsborough Garden Club, Hillsborough Historical Society, Delta Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, United Way, Home Economics Association, Orange County Red Cross, Orange Congregations in Mission, Orange County Retired School Personnel, America Legion Auxiliary, and the Meredith College Alumnae.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Muriel Victor Auman Frazier, and her brother, Frank D. Castlebury Jr.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Guido DeMaere of Chapel Hill; grandson, Thomas McGregor Frazier of Mt. Holly; granddaughters, Christine Auman DeMaere and Carolyn Auman DeMaere of Chapel Hill; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Reuben Shaw of Raleigh, and her friend and faithful helper, Mary Jo Ray of Liberty. She is also survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn Castlebury and Mack Auman of Raleigh, Sally Auman, Earl and Joyce Auman, Raymond and Juanita Auman of Moore County, and Howard and Maxine Auman of Sanford; 17 nieces and nephews and their families, many cousins, friends, and former students.
There will be a visitation in Strudwick Hall at the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church Friday evening from 6:30-8:30. A memorials service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church.
She requested that memorials be made to the Hillsborough Presbyterian Church, Box 717, Hillsborough, NC 27278; the Orange County Historical Museum, 201 N. Churton St., Hillsborough, NC 27278; or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Raleigh.
