First child of Gill Armistead Cary and Sarah Baytop Cary.

Graduated in 1839 from William and Mary. In 1847 he became principal of Syms-Eaton School in Hampton, Va., he organized the Hampton Military Academy and became headmaster and held the position until the outbreak of the Civil War.

In 1861 he was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the 32nd Virginia Infantry Regiment,and was acting Provost Marshall of Yorktown in the early part of 1862.

After the war, Cary was employed as a storekeeper at the state penitentiary, and in the wholesale grocery business, was an insurance agent with the Piedmont and Arlington Life Insurance Company.
