Mrs. Sammye Carter Baker, 83, Retired Receptionist and Bookkeeper at Graceland Care Center, died Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford.
There will be a Funeral Service on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Dabbs, Rev. Annette Ford and Mr. Matthew Jackson Officiating.
Burial will follow in Pine Flat Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Monday, December 31, 2012 from 3:30 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. at Waller Funeral Home.
Mrs. Baker was Born on April 16, 1929 in Pittsboro, MS to Lula Cooner Carter & J. P. Carter.
She Graduated High School in 1947 in Pittsboro. MS.
After moving to Chicago in 1947 she Married Charles Shaw Baker in 1949 and had 47 years together until his death in 1996.
In 1955 the Bakers moved back to Calhoun County, MS and Mrs. Baker began working at Calhoun Garment Company as a Secretary.
In 1959 she moved to Taylor, MS and lived there the remainder of her life.
She also worked as a Secretary at Freeman Truck Line for 30 years and Graceland Care Center as a Receptionist/Bookkeeper for 17 years, Retiring shortly before her 83rd Birthday.
She was a Member of Taylor United Methodist Church, where she served as Treasurer for 32 years.
She was formerly a Clerk for the Town of Taylor and Served as Trustee and Treasurer for the Pine Flat Cemetery.
Mrs. Baker loved to Cook and for people and everyone, young and old, always knew they were welcome in her home.
She loved people and they knew it and was like a Mother and Grandmother to a lot of people.
She loved to Sew and Cross-Stitch, Baby Quilts that were made by her are all over the state of Mississippi, especially the Colonel Rebel ones.
She was preceded in death by her Son, Kenneth Shaw Baker in 1981; and also by a Sister, Mary Jane Lowery; and Brother, Jim Porter Carter, Jr.
Survivors include her three Daughters, Jane Bryan of Taylor, MS; Jean Pinion and Husband, Rusty of Tula, MS; and Kathye Thweatt and Husband, Jerry of Tupelo, MS; seven Grandchildren and eleven Great Grandchildren.
Memorial Contributions in Mrs. Baker's Memory may be made to Pine Flat Cemetery Fund, 667 Hwy 7 South, Oxford, MS 38655; or Taylor United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 45 Taylor, MS 38673.
