James R. Carter, 76, of Columbus, died at 4:05 a.m. Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mr. Carter founded Carter Sweeper Sales on 25th Street in Columbus in 1976. He attended Central Heights Church of God and throughout his life kept a strong faith in the Lord. He loved to fish, garden and in recent years found a new love in cooking.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street with Pastor Nathan Greene officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.

Born in Yancey, KY, Dec. 17, 1934, Mr. Carter was the son of James Oscar and Sallie McCreary Carter. He married Irene A. Harris May 6, 1955 in Sneedsville, TN.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James M. (Denise) Carter of Hartsville; a daughter, Debra A. (Terry) Barkes of Edinburgh; sisters, Chrystal Allison of South Carolina, Hannah Garland of Cumberland, KY, and Elizabeth Lloyd of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Jennifer Devening of Freetown, Ronald Walker of Arizona, Christopher Barkes of Edinburgh, Nicole Windland of Columbus and Joshua Carter of Hartsville; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Tommy Carter; and a sister, Bonita Carter.
