Mabel, age 84.
Mrs. Carter was a charter member of Caring and Sharing, a ministry for those in need in Washington, DC, and the Appalachians. For years, she prepared sandwiches, food and clothing and traveled in all types of weather to distribute these items to the needy on the streets of DC where she was known as “Mama Mabel, the Egg Lady.”
Mrs. Carter was a long-time member of Woodbine Baptist Church where she held the position of Superintendent of the Junior Department and passionately taught Sunday School for forty-five years. Mabel was extremely proud of her work teaching youth about the Bible and is now home where she taught her young classes they would go if they accepted Jesus. She led the restoration project of the original Woodbine “Little Church” which was built in 1878.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mable Roderick of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Gladys Drodz; and a brother, Charles Roderick Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Harry Carter Sr. of Manassas, VA; three daughters, Shelia Barr of Winchester, VA, Daniele Michael of Manassas, VA, and Arenda Bingham and her husband, TJ, of Stafford, VA; one son, Harry Carter Jr. of Falling Waters, WV; one sister, Jessie Frederick and her husband, Fred, of Wilmington, NC; two brothers, George Roderick and his wife, Ann, of Magnolia, NC, and Walter Roderick and his wife, Marie, of Berlin, MD; four grandsons, William Michael III and his wife, Toni, Gary Michael, Michael Carter and Vernon Barr; two granddaughters, Kammie Bingham and Karissa Bingham. Nanny’s special friend DJ Whitman.
