Sadie Grace (Carter) Short
June 29, 1918 ~ November 24, 2012
Sadie was born Sara Grace Carter in Quincy Country, Washington to Charles Benjamin and Cora Carter, where the house still stands today. Sadie lived in Frenchman Hills, Quincy until she was two years old, when her dad sold the house and moved to the W.R. Prowl place as a share cropper on Stemilt Hill. In 1928, when Sadie was ten years old, her dad purchased a 40 acre ranch on Stemilt Creek Road. She walked to a one-room school house in ankle socks and a dress, sometimes in five foot snow drifts, until the eighth grade. Then at age 14, she moved in with her grandmother, Ida Kathryn Graham, in Brender Canyon and for two years went to school, until she caught pneumonia and had to move back home. At age 16, she saw an ad in the paper for help wanted and got a job with Mrs. Earl "Marge" Van Tassel as a maid and stayed there until she graduated from high school in 1938. She met Willard E. Short at age 22, and they married in March 1940. They had four children, Sylvia, David, Judy and Janet. In 1940, Willard and Sadie bought property in East Wenatchee, where they raised their family and maintained a home on an orchard for 65 years, with the help from their children and grandchildren. She lived in her home most of the remaining years of her life, until she recently moved in with her daughter, Janet. Sadie was a smart business woman; she invested in real estate throughout the years. She loved and lived for her children and enjoyed spending time with her family. Sadie and Willard both loved music and played in the "Old Time Fiddlers" for 25 years, until Willard passed away. Sadie would play her violin at many family gatherings.
Sadie is survived by her children, Sylvia Gifford (Dale) of North Bend, OR, David Short (Joyce Varnel) of East Wenatchee, Judy Doolittle (Steve) of Wenatchee and Janet Gifford (Rick) of East Wenatchee; brother, Walter "Bud" Carter (Mae) of Joplin, MO; grandchildren, Lance Scheiber of Bremerton, Lydia Scheiber of Bainbridge Island, and Rachelle Wilson, Alyssa Van Doren, Stephanie Gifford, Dane Gifford and Brandon Gifford, all of Wenatchee and East Wenatchee; great-grandchildren, David Milne of Olympia, Brigette Milne of Bainbridge Island, Ashley Clements of East Wenatchee, and Lacey Wilson and Sophia Van Doren, both of Wenatchee; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, Charles and Cora Carter; husband, Willard Short; sisters, Myrtle Bland and Rose Gullickson; brother, James Carter; granddaughter, Christina Doolittle-Clements; great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Doolittle-Wilson; and daughter-in-law, JoAnn "Bobbie" Short.
