Andrew W. Carter, 426 Alder street, was run down by a taxicab, owned by the Portland Taxicab Company, and driven by D. C. Resser, at Eleventh and Alder streets, at midnight last night. Carter was picked up unconscious and sent to the Good Samaritan Hospital. He is suffering from a fracture of the right leg and painful injuries about the chest and head.
The accident occurred when Carter and a friend, W. A. Simpson, attempted to cross the street in the path of the speeding taxi. Blinded by the glare of the powerful lights of the car and the driving rain, neither gauged the distance of the approaching vehicle. Resser made an attempt to avert the collision. The wheels of the taxi failed to grip the pavement owing to the wet surface. Simpson escaped. Resser conveyed the injured man to the hospital in the ill-fated taxi.
