SERVICES HELD AUGUST 7 for FERNE HARTLEY, 91
Services were held August 7 for Nina Ferne HARTLEY, 91, at First Christian Church in Blockton, Ia., with Rev. Mel SMITH officiating. Mrs. HARTLEY died August 4, at Afton Care Center in Afton, where she had resided since 1978. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blockton.
Nina Ferne CARTER, the daughter of Day and Madonna (RUSH) CARTER, was born November 16, 1890, in Ringgold County near Maloy, Iowa. She spent her girlhood in the vicinity and on December 5, 1908 was married to Hugh Josephus HARTLEY. Three children were born to them, John Day, Hugh Keenan and Barbara Virginia.
She joined the Christian Church in Blockton and later transferred her membership to the Christian Church in Creston, Ia. Besides being a good wife and mother, she spent her life nursing and caring for others. For many years she acted as midwife, both in Blockton and in Missouri, where she and her husband lived for a time.
Ferne was preceded in death by her husband, in 1939, all of her children and one granddaughter.
She is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Ruth ENGLAND, Creston; Mrs. Mary BISHOFF, California; and Mrs. Margery KUTNOCK, California; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
