Evelyn Kuykendall Carter was born on March 16, 1916, to James Kyle and Mable Beverly Kuykendall, in Runge, Texas. She transitioned to eternity on November 12, 2016, in Dallas, Texas. A celebrated Centurion acknowledged by President and First Lady Obama, Mrs. Carter was 100 years in age.
Affectionately regarded as "Auntie" by family and friends alike, Mrs. Carter was salutatorian of her high school graduating class. She received a scholarship to attend Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and a master's degree in Elementary Education Administration and Supervision.
Upon graduating from Prairie View, Mrs. Carter began her career in public education. She taught for an impressive 36 years before retiring. She and her husband, Willie James Carter, taught school together for 19 years. They enjoyed traveling, entertaining, dancing, and playing games. The two were married for 50 years, seven months, and two days until Willie's passing. Mrs. Carter remained faithful to her vows even after her husband's passing. She often shared her thought that "there will never be another man like my WJ."
Mrs. Carter received much recognition for the time she spent educating others. She received a stipend from Stephen F. Austin State University to attend the NDEA Reading Institute in 1965. She was inducted into the Asberry High School Hall of Fame in Yoakum, Texas, in 1992. A once in a lifetime accomplishment, she was pictured in the Daily Sentinel in 1996 for being an excellent educator. Her passion for education was also recognized by Boy Scouts of America, in which she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother for 23 years. She was distinguished as the first African American female recipient of the Silver Fawn Award from the Boy Scouts.
Mrs. Carter's memberships were numerous, including Texas Teachers Retirement Association (lifetime), Nacogdoches County Retired Teachers Association (lifetime), American Association of University Women, and Prairie View A&M University Alumni. Along with various memberships, her accomplishments were many, including being listed in the 2007 edition of the Who's Who of American Women. She also received an award from the American Association of University Women for Community Service on April 23, 2007, from Stephen F. Austin State University, and was crowned as Prairie View's homecoming queen.
Mrs. Carter had many hobbies, including attending church, reading, listening to music, traveling, and working with young people. Most noteworthy, Mrs. Carter was a self-taught pianist. She was pleased to bless her longtime church, Zion Hill First Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, with her gift for many years at no charge.
Mrs. Carter was predeceased by her parents, brother, husband. Those left to cherish precious memories include her nephew and his wife, Lozell and Francis Carter, with whom she resided; special great niece, Inett Carter; nephew, Jeff Carter (Doris); nephew, Kenny Carter; cousin, Kirt Kuykendall; special friend, Almeda Burrell and her family; Harvey and Roz Mason & the Fourplay Group; her devoted neighbor, Linda McClain; her caregivers: Ruthesia "Pooh" Searcy, Debra Redwine, Tiffany King, and Connie Wilson; Billy C. Heath and Prairie View A&M Alumni Association; Zion Hill First Baptist Church family; Pastor Tommy L. Brown and the New Mount Zion Baptist Church Family; and a host of great nieces, great nephews; and friends.
