Bettye Joyce Carter Eichelberger, longtime resident of Gary, Indiana transitioned Tuesday, February 28, 2012 in her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born Bettye Joyce Carter to James and Voncille in Winston County, Mississippi and the youngest of sixteen children in which twelve preceded her in death. She graduated from Camille Street High School in Louisville, MS in 1966; a graduate of Alcorn State College in 1969 with a BA in Business Education. She met and fell in love with her wonderful husband Harold and married on February 26, 1972. She was the loving mother of Bria and Reverend Harold Jhirmack. Bettye moved to Gary in 1972 where she began her career as an educator. She received a Master's degree in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington. She was a member of First Baptist Church (Gary, IN). Her community and civic involvement included membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Tots and Teens, Inc., and political activist. Bettye's legacy will live on through her loving husband, Harold, her two devoted children, Bria (Atlanta, GA and Reverend Harold Jhirmack (Hot Springs, AR); three brothers: Varnie (Jean) of Boston, MA; Felton (Maggie) of St. Louis, MO; James (Shirley) of Louisvile, MS; one sister, Icie (Richard) of Adelphi, MD. All services will be held at First Baptist Church, 626 West 21st Ave. Family hour will be held Sunday, March 4, 2012 (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM with an Omega Omega Service of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. beginning at 6:00 PM). Visitation will be held Monday, March 5, 2012 (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Louisville, MS.
