David H. “Jake” Carter, age 73, of Mount Vernon, died Friday November 18, 2005 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon following a brief illness. Jake was born January 26, 1932 in Mount Vernon to Lester David and Irene (Ackerman) Carter and had spent his lifetime in the Fredericktown area. He was a 1950 graduate of Fredericktown High School, and entered the U S Army for training as a paratrooper. An injury during military training sent Jake home with a medical discharge. He started his banking career at the Dan Struble Bank in Fredericktown, which was later purchased by the First Knox National Bank. Jake retired from the First Knox National Bank in 1987 as a Vice President.

He was a member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church, served on the fund raising committee for the Fredericktown Community Center, was a member of the Fredericktown Historical Society, and had served as a Wayne Township Trustee. Jake was one of the founders of the Fredericktown High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Friends may call today (Monday) from 4 to 8 PM at the Snyder Funeral Home in Fredericktown and on Tuesday from noon until 2 PM at the Green Valley United Methodist Church where funeral services will follow at 2 PM with Pastor Sam Troyer officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
