76th IL Infantry, Iroquois County, Co K, Civil War. Fought in many engagements including 47 day siege of Vicksburg. I have piece of surrender tree from Vicksburg he carried in and after the war. Commissioned 2nd LT. at Muster out. A great and brave soldier. Knew Generals John Logan and Lew Wallace personally. Held every office in GAR after the war.A. L. Carter, formerly of the Normandie hotel, died at St. John's hospital this morning at the age of 86 years. Funeral services will be at the Branson funeral parlor. Interment in Oak Ridge.

Surviving are five sons, A. E. Carter, Moberly; A.M. Carter, Mt. Carmel; W. E. Carter, Nebraska; Edward Carter, Iowa, and L. R. Carter of Virginia. Also one daughter, Mrs. A. J. Paulson of Nebraska.
