Ruth Hannah Carr

Ruth Hannah Carr, 89, of Topeka, KS, passed away Saturday morning, October 16, 2010, at Atria Healthcare in Topeka where she had been a resident for three and a half years.

Ruth Hannah Ploeger was born on November 17, 1920 near Robinson, KS, on the Ploeger family farm, one of four daughters of William and Celesta Ruth Ploeger and was a lifelong resident of northeast Kansas.

Ruth grew up near Robinson, KS. She attended Hiawatha Central School, prior to graduating with the class of 1938 at Hiawatha High School, in Hiawatha, KS.

Ruth was a housewife, and she worked at various jobs, Bierer's Department Store as a bookkeeper and clerk, Ben Franklin Variety Store, and Brown County Treasurers Office, all of Hiawatha. She later worked for the State of Kansas Employment Security Office in Topeka, KS for 22 years, retiring in 1982.

Mrs. Carr was a member of Tecumseh United Methodist Church; and Rollin Sam's Camping Club. She was fifty year member of Helena Chapter #210, Order of Star of Topeka. She made angel food wedding cakes during the 1950's and enjoyed making silk flower arrangements. Ruth made and gave away more than 5000 plastic crosses. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling by motor home, visiting all 50 states in 25 years.

She was married to Sylvin R. Carr, August 3, 1941, at Hiawatha. They lived on the Carr Homestead east of Willis, KS, prior to moving to the Hamlin Community. In 1960, they moved to Topeka to make their home. He survives.

Also surviving are two children, Ruth Ann Carr-Parker of Hoyt, KS; and William Sylvin Carr of Tucson, AZ; three sisters, Ruby Nolte, Ida Mae Hooper, and Margaret Spare, all of Hiawatha; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; William and Celesta Ruth Ploeger, and a son Robert Cyril Carr who passed away in 1946.

Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Thursday, October 21, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Reverend Randy Quinn will officiate. Internment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, KS. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Wednesday. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Thursday.
