Death of Dr. Carpenter
Former Treasury Employe Who Was Well-Known and Liked
Dr. James A.S. Carpenter, one of the most widely known and respect older citizens of the District died this morning shortly after 6 o'clock at his residence, No. 439 I Street Northwest. Dr. Carpenter, who had been in poor health for the past three or four years, ws stricken with apoplexy last Friday night and had been in a semi-comatose condition ever since, paralysis of the right side having followed the stroke. His brother, L.C. Carpenter of the Cincinnati Post Office, who was telegraphed for, arrived Sunday night and was with the sufferer when death came.

Dr. Carpenter, who was seventy-four years old, was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but after graduating in medicine went west to Missouri, where he practiced his profession. He was a man of strong Union tendencies and early in 1861 his readiness to uphold his views caused him to receive violent treatment. He came to Washington and was given an appointment in the Treasury Department. Up to four years ago and for many years previously he was a popular and efficient clerk in the sixth auditor's office, retiring on account of his health. He is survived by a daughter, Miss Sarah Carpenter, and two brothers, L.C. and J.E. Carpenter. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his late residence and interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. Dr. Alexander Kent will conduct the services.
