Mr. Bobby Chesnut Carpenter, 54, well-known musician and owner of Protec Medical Company, died Friday, January 24, 2003 at Maury Regional Hospital after becoming ill unexpectedly at his residence on Pinehurst Drive.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Kevin White officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Central High School Band Program. A 1966 graduate of Columbia Central High School, he earned a degree in Music from Middle Tennessee State University. While a student at Central, he was a member of of the Concert Band and Orchestra, Pep Band, Dixieland Band and Stage Band. He was selected as a member of the All-State Band in 1963, 1964 and 1965. As a member of the Marching Band, he served as 2nd Lieutenant 1963-1965 and as Band Captain 1965-1966.
He continued his music career as a composer and teacher of brass instrument students for 30 years and was former Co-Band Director at Pulaski High School. He was a member of several ensembles, including The Nightcaps, Lemonade Charades and the Buzzy Orange Band; was a session and studio artist at Capitol Records and member of the Tennessee National Guard Band. In 1988, at the invitation of the American Ambassador, he participated in a performance at the United States Embassy in the People's Republic of China. Additionally, he was a member of the Church of Christ and an avid gardener.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Woodward Carpenter of Columbia; two children, Chris (Sunny) Carpenter and Shon Carpenter, both of Columbia; his father, Robert Lee Carpenter of Columbia; a sister, Dana (Donald) White of Columbia; mother and father-in-law, Macel and Pete Woodward of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Terry Woodward of Nashville; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ervie Pallen Chesnut Carpenter.
Active pallbearers are Jeff White, Mark Gandy, Terry Underwood, Bobby Murphy, Donald White, Newton Derryberry, Clay Derryberry, Joe Horne and Andy Derryberry. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Holder, Bill Jones, Butch Prosser, Terry Burnside and former music students.
