Mary Louise CAROTHERS, more commonly known as "Mollie", is the 2nd daughter of Joseph Addison CAROTHERS and Sarah Adaline THORN. She was born 23 Jan 1869 York Co., SC.
In the 1869 South Carolina State census for York Co. what appears to be J.A. CAROTHERS and family are listed and certainly by 1870 they are in Fort Mill, York Co., SC.
In 1880 "Mollie" is living in Steele Creek, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina with her family. In 1885 she gives birth to her daughter Lula Mae CAROTHERS out of wedlock. She had just turned 16. Lula Mae's father was not made known to the family. There was speculation that it was "That Old GLOVER Man"1 that would take her on buggy rides. Floyd writes this in email to me "All we know about Glover is Uncle Frank Carothers said he asked his father and all that was said was it may have been that Old Glover Man.1 Through Carol COSTNER PITTMAN's DNA we have determined that Lula Mae's father is in fact a GLOVER.......Burlie Franklin "Doc" GLOVER. "Doc" was "Mollie's" half brother-in-law. He was married to Sarah Elizabeth MERRITT.
With the 1890 Federal Census being destroyed we know very little of the family until about 1896 when "Mollie" marries William Alexander BRANDON. It was William's 2nd marriage (William's first wife was Lucy GLOVER, who just happens to be sister to "Doc" GLOVER). At this time "Mollie" is 27 years old. The 1900 census in Bethel, York Co., South Carolina shows William and "Mollie" with 4 children from William's first marriage and the first of William and "Mollie's" children, Clawson and Sadie. Lula Mae is not with her mother. It looks like she is living with Joseph and Sarah CAROTHERS, her grandparents.
In 1910, 1920 and 1930 William and "Mollie" are living in Gaston Co., North Carolina and they have had six children, Clawson Ratchford, Sadie, Jennie Melva, Remie M., Charles Ross and Floyd Maxwell. William A. died in 1938 and in the 1940 census we find "Mollie" living with her son Charles Ross in South Point, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. In the 1950 census she is living with her daughter Sadie and family in Cramerton, Gaston Co., North Carolina. On 24 Jan 1958 "Mollie" dies....just one day after her 89th birthday, in Shady Lawn Rest Home in Gastonia. She is buried in the Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Gastonia, North Carolina.

One of the things I wonder about is, what was "Mollie" doing during the 11 years from the birth of Lula Mae and the time she married William A. BRANDON.
