Shirley M. Carothers, 73, of 810 W. 12th St., Milan, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Coal Valley. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island, with a Christian wake service at 2 p.m., and a Rock Island VFW Post 1303 Auxiliary memorial service at 5 p.m. Additional visitation is 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

In appreciation of the extraordinary and loving care given to Shirley, memorials may be made to Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, or Pathway Hospice, Rock Island.

The former Shirley Marx was born May 1, 1926, in East Moline, the daughter of John J. and Dorothy McGuire Marx. She married Virgil D. Carothers June 7, 1947, in Milan.

Mrs. Carothers had worked as a school crossing guard in Coal Valley for 18 years, retiring in 1991.

She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, life member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 299 Auxiliary, Milan American Legion Post 569 Auxiliary, Rock Island Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1303 Auxiliary and a charter member of the Oak Glen Home Auxiliary.

She enjoyed bowling and had bowled in several different bowling leagues over the years.

Survivors include her husband; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Sue Carothers, Rock Island, David Carothers, Garden Grove, Calif., Timothy and Traci Carothers, Sherrard; grandchildren, Sara Kertz, East Peoria, Cameron Carothers, Milan, Tanner and Ty Carothers, Sherrard; great-grandchildren, Warren, Sam and Connor Carothers, and Nicholas and Adam Kertz; and brothers and sisters, May Hamerlinck, Orion, Jack Marx, Rock Island, and Bernard "Bud" Marx, James Marx, Dorothy Ellen Mueller, and Carol Leonard, all of Milan. She was preceded in death by her parents.
