Andrew Thomas Carney, "Tom", of Huntsville passed away Thursday after a short illness. Tom was born in the Hurricane Creek area and was a life-long resident of Huntsville.
Tom was owner and publisher of the "Old Huntsville" magazine, along with his wife Cathey, since 1989. In addition, Tom has two published books, "The Way It Was" and "Portraits in Time." He assisted other authors with several more local books. He won numerous awards over the years for his writing and is nationally renowned for his historical contributions.
Tom impressed you as a gruff, "get it done now" kind of guy who didn't waste words (especially on the phone) but you always knew exactly where you stood with him. He was a very proud man who held his friends dear. A voracious reader of history, he averaged two books each day. He had compassion and gentleness for those he loved.
He was preceded in death by his younger brother Jim Carney, father Andrew Carney, uncle Floyd Frazier and beloved grandfather who raised him, Oscar Thomas Frazier.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Cathey; stepdaughter, Stephanie Troup and husband, John; step-grandchildren, Evan and Hannah Troup; mother-in-law, Dr. Annelie Owens; daughter, Peggy Rhoden and husband, Jeff; grandchildren, Amanda Stolz, Alicia Stolz, David Adam Stolz and Joey Rhoden; brother-in-law, Ken Owens and wife, Diane, and their son, Brandon Owens and wife, Susan Trentham; brother, David Carney and wife, Judy; as well as many cousins, including Linda Drace, Sandy Hines and Ann Frazier Hill. His very favorite nephew was Michael Carney.
The family would like to thank Clearview Cancer Institute for their compassion and care with Tom, as well as the doctors, nurses and staff of Huntsville Hospital 7th floor. Tom was a very proud and accomplished individual who, even while providing great stories in the magazine, gave himself the title of "Copy Boy." His passing is a huge loss for the many who had the privilege of knowing him.
Graveside services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at Maple Hill Cemetery with Dr. Darryl Goldman officiating. There will be no prior visitation. Laughlin Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations be made to the Golden K Kiwanis Club in Tom's memory, P.O. Box 4648, Huntsville, Al 35815.
