Ada E. Carmin Barnum was the second wife of Horace Elihu Barnum. Her first husband Mandes Myers drowned in 1909. She and Horace had one son Horace Elihu Barnum Jr. born in 1916.
Starke County Democrat, Knox, Indiana, November 27, 1918:
Mrs. (Horace) Elihu Barnum, after a hopeless struggle with influenza and pneumonia, resulting in the premature birth of a child, passed out of this life at the family home in the south-west part of town, Sunday evening at 8:30 o'clock. Her untimely and most unfortunate death has aroused the sympathy of the entire community. Mr. Barnum, the husband, is also having a serious time with the influenza and the two oldest boys are just recovering from the disease.
Ada Elma Carmin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Carmin of this city, was born in Starke County, Nov. 13, 1882, and died Nov. 24, 1918, at the age of 36 years and 11 days. She was united in marriage to Mandes L. Myers, Nov. 11, 1906, whose death by drowning left her a widow with two small sons in the late summer of 1909. On Oct. 27, 1915, she was united in marriage to Horace E. Barnum and to this union one son was born. She leaves the husband, three sons, Mandes, aged 12, Minor, aged 10, and Horace E. Jr., aged 2; her aged parents, one sister, Mrs. Bertha Baldwin of South Bend, many other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her death. Mrs. Barnum was a splendid young woman and was held in high esteem by all who knew her. Though her life was one of constant service and sacrifice for others, she was always cheerful and never complained of her lot. She was devoted to the little family circle and it is here that the greatest sorrow has come. Brief funeral services, in charge of A. L. Wakefield, will be conducted from the home this afternoon and interment will be made at Crown Hill cemetery.
