Lucy M. (Carmack) Bates 1838-1916
Lucy M. Bates (nee Carmack), was born in Tennessee, January 10, 1838, and died at the home of her son, W.A. Bates, July 22, 1916, aged 78 years, 6 months, and 12 days. She was married to James L. Bates in 1858, and 10 children were born to them whose names are as follows: Rebecca Claybrooks, of Scammon, Kansas, Mary Overby, deceased, Infant unnamed, Avarilla Payne, deceased, Susan E. Smith of Swedeborg, Missouri, Effie Herod of Detroit, Michigan, Janie M. Copeland, Hancock, Missouri, Harriet Peterson, Webster Groves, Missouri, and Wm. A. Bates, Dixon, Missouri.

She united with the Christian Church at an early age, and has continued to live an earnest, consistent Christian life until the Master has seen fit to say: "It is enough , come up higher, to enjoy the bliss of an eternal abode prepared for those who love and serve Him."

Grandma Bates has lived a long and useful life, out-living all her brothers and sisters except two: Uncle John Carmack and Aunt Elizabeth Payne, of Crocker, Missouri.

Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Crocker, Sunday, July 23, 1916, and then her remains were tenderly laid to rest by the side of her husband, James L. Bates, who preceded her to the Glory Land, February 5, 1908.
