Her education began at Ash Creek rural school. She graduated from Beresford High School and attended the Sioux City School of Business. Avis was employed at the Beresford Coop Association for many years. She married Palmer Antonson on March 11, 1948. They farmed south of Union County Park. Avis worked at the Union County Clerk of Courts from 1975 to 1992. The couple continued to farm until Palmer's death in 2001 when Avis moved into Beresford and became a resident at Bethesda Nursing Home.
Avis was baptized and confirmed at Dalesburg Lutheran Church. After her marriage she joined Roseni Lutheran Church and later became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was an active member of the Roseni and Emmanuel Ladies Aid, lifetime member of the Beresford VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Chairwoman for the Union County Cancer Society, and was a member of the J.U.G and Opti-Mrs. Extension clubs. Avis enjoyed collecting recipes, cooking for her family and friends, sewing and traveling with Palmer. Her greatest love in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-laws, seven, grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, 3 sisters, one brother, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Emerald Carlson, sister-in-law Marlene Carlson, brothers-in-law Rockley Erickson and Morris Selle, and nephew David Selle.
