Death: Apr. 13, 2012

Alden Carl Emmanuel Carlson, 100, of Boise, passed away peacefully at home April 13, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Burial will conclude at Cloverdale Memorial Park.

Alden was born on September 21, 1911, in Loomis, NE, the 5th child of Joseph and Emma Carlson, both born and educated in Sweden. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Holdrege High School in 1929.

While attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he was a member of Sigma Xi, Sigma Tau and Pi Mu Epsilon. He graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Following graduation, he worked as an engineer for the Nebraska State Highway Department, the Soil Conservation Service and Tri County.

In 1940, he married Ruth Irene Nylander in Loomis. They moved to Hastings where son, Gary, and daughter, Pat, were born. In 1948, he took the family to Mendoza, Argentina, where he was in charge of field surveys for a power and irrigation project. Daughter, Paula, was born after they returned to Nebraska in 1949, and Alden went to work for JA Terteling & Sons, moving to their headquarters in Boise in late 1950. He continued with Terteling's until his retirement in 1980.

Alden was a member of Masonic Lodge #2, the Scottish Rite, and EI Korah Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Boise Chamber of Commerce for several years. He also was a long time member of Whitney United Methodist Church, serving on the Portland District Council of Finance and Administration for the church for several years.

He enjoyed bowling and golfing for more than 70 years and was especially proud to hit a hole-in-one at age 87! He also enjoyed fishing and hunting and, after his retirement, he and Ruth enjoyed several cruises in various parts of the world and visiting relatives in Sweden. He was also a loyal Bronco fan.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth I. Carlson, of Boise; son, Gary and his wife, Charlotte, of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Pat Miller and her husband, Larry, of Boise; and daughter, Paula Weir, of Seattle, Washington; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, Charlotte, sister, Ethel Rilea, of Portland, OR and brothers, Earl and Milton, of Holdrege, NE.

The family requests no flowers but suggests memorials may be made to Whitney United Methodist Church, 3315 Overland Rd., Boise, 10 83705.
