DULUTH, Minn. - Roy E. Carlson, 89, passed away on June 20, 2011, in St. Luke's Hospital with his son and special caregiver nearby.
He was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Escanaba, where he attended school and then worked as an apprentice to a cabinetmaker, and at the Birds Eye Veneer Co. He entered the army, and trained at Camp Robinson, Alaska, and Fort Meade, Md., and then to officers school in Williamsport, Pa., as a flight cadet. His class returned to the army with the 66th Infantry Division and then on to Europe. On Christmas Eve, 1944, as they headed for France to fight at the Battle of the Bulge, the troop ship he was on, The Leopoloville, was torpedoed and sunk with a great loss of lives.
He and his wife went to France with members of the Division where they were honored on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of France from German occupation.
Returning from the war he managed a bowling alley in Escanaba, where he met his wife Shirley.
He graduated from Cloverland College in Escanaba, and then UMD with a BA degree in accounting and business. He worked for Robert Anderson CPA, Foremost Dairies, and was an officer in the Duluth Milk Company. He was secretary treasurer of Modem Constructors, Marine Iron and Shipbuilders, and Pipe Benders Inc. He retired in 1989 from Meierhoff, Inc. But he still went to Pipe Benders every Friday morning.
He thoroughly enjoyed taking care of his yard and gardens, curling, golfing, and was an avid UMD Hockey fan. He loved lap and special treat time with his kitty Tyger.
We have been very grateful for the special attention and bond that Roy and Shirley's caregiver, Gloria Kaneski, has given them.
He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Lester Park Senior Golfers, and now has memberships in the Duluth Elks Lodge 133, Duluth Curling Club, Lake Superior Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Lester Park AARP, VFW American Legion, United Commercial Travelers, Golden K Kiwanis and a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife of one week short of 60 years Shirley, on Sept. 4, 2009, and his sister Ruth of Escanaba.
He is survived by his son, Daryl of Duluth, and brother, Robert of Escanaba.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday in the Dougherty Funeral Home Chapel and will continue Friday, June 24, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service in Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
