The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book.
Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Carlson were for several years associated with the civic, religious, and fraternal organizations of this community.
Mr. Carlson served 15 consecutive years as a member of the city council, beginning in 1920. In 1894 he joined the local Masonic order, serving as worshipful master in 1908 and 1920, remaining affiliated with this organization until his death. He and his wife were active in the Lutheran church circles here, and Mrs. Carlson was for several years a member of the ladies' aid group of that church.
Mr. Carlson was born July 4, 1854, a unique incident later prevailing, in the fact that Mrs. Carlson was also born on that same date. He was born at Gurshen, Norway, where he grew to manhood and served in the Norwegian army for three years, being honorably discharged in 1879. In May, 1881 he joined the immigrants to America and upon his arrival to this country located at Hudson, Lincoln County, Dakota Territory.
Here he was employed on the railroad section for more than two rears, and in the winter of 1883 returned to Norway, marrying Miss Sara Nilsdat on April 6, 1884. The couple came to America shortly later where he had provided a home.
Here Mr. Carlson continued his duties on the railroad section crew, and within a short time was promoted to foreman of that group, between Rock Valley and Hudson. In 1889 the family came to Lennox, he being transferred here, and for 15 years he was Milwaukee section foreman from this point.
In 1919 the couple took up their residence in Lennox, where they remained until their demise. They feted their golden wedding anniversary in 1934.
Children surviving include: Hardy Carlson, of Volin, S. D.; Mrs. Martin Lee, of Flandreau, S. D.; Robert Lee of St. Paul, Minn., and George Carlson, of Lennox. Also nine grandchildren and one step brother of Mr. Carlson.
Mr. Carlson passed away March 1, 1938 at the age of 83 years, seven months, and 27 days.
Mrs. Carlson was born at Giersveken, Norway, July 4, 1854, and remained there until her marriage. She died February 2, 1937.
