William had been a resident of Oceana County since 1870 when he traveled with his parents from Ontario, Canada by crossing into Michigan at Port Huron, taking a train into Grand Haven, Michigan; then by small steamship into Pentwater which, at the time, was just a small sawmill town, and settling in Weare Township, Oceana County, Michigan with his parents and siblings.
