Joe Carey, age 82 of Abilene, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Hendrick Medical Center.
Graveside funeral services were Thursday, Feb. 25, in the Breckenridge Cemetery with Gary Choate and Shirley Beth Reibe officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Services were entrusted to Morehart Mortuary of Breckenridge.
Joe Lee Carey was born on July 6, 1927, in Caddo, to parents, Otis Yarbrough "O.Y." Carey and Bess Dale Slemmons Carey.



He graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1946 and joined the United States Navy.
While enlisted in the military Joe served as a member of the Navy Seabees and was stationed in Guam. Following his honorable discharge from the military, he attended Texas Christian University and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Geology.
Joe began working in the petroleum industry in 1954 and ten years later he began his own business as a consultant petroleum geologist. Joe enjoyed drilling oil wells and finding new oilfields.
He semi-retired in 2000, but continued consulting for another decade. At the time of his death, Joe was drilling a new well in Scurry County, about which he was very excited. He was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
Joe married Sheryl Anne Bartlett on Jan. 22, 1972. The couple made their home in Midland and later moved to Abilene in 1978. Joe was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Abilene. He was preceded in death by his parents and one step-granddaughter, Michelle Angela McConnell.


Joe is survived by his wife of 38 years, Anne Carey of Abilene; two sons, Jim Carey of Seattle, Wash., and John Carey and fiancΓ©e, Candelyn of Abilene; three daughters, Phyllis Bradshaw of Plano, Cindy Hyer of Midland and Allison Howard and husband, Danny of Watauga; two step-sons, Matt McConnell and Bruce McConnell and wife, Ursula, all of Shenandoah; three grandchildren, Marlena Conway of Norman, Okla., Chris Bradshaw and wife, Karen of Detroit and Jason Bradshaw and wife, Sunny of Allen; three great grandchildren, Bailey Bradshaw and Taylor Bradshaw, both of Allen and Cayden Conway of Norman, Okla.; three step-grandchildren, Ryan McConnell and wife, Daniella, Chris Moore and Elizabeth Moore, all of Shenandoah; one step-great grandchild, Brian Blackburn of Detroit; and one brother, Norman Carey of Jacksboro.
