Houston Chronicle, February 2, 2003:

Cleo Mae Russell Capps entered eternal rest January 30, 2003 at the age of 87. A member of the West End Baptist Church for more than 70 years, she also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Bayou City Democratic Women's Club. For more than 18 years, she was an employee of the Houston Independent School District where she worked with physically and mentally challenged children.

Preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of over 68 years, William Thomas "Bill" Capps, and their son, John Clifton Capps.

Her survivors include daughters, Jeannine Capps Foster and husband, Thomas E. Foster, Andrea Joan Capps Douglas and husband, Gilbert D. Douglas; grandchildren, Ellen Joan Foster and David Thomas Foster, Kathryn Elizabeth Ward, and Victoria Jeannine Douglas; granddaughter-in-law, Jessamyn H. Foster; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Early in life, she was an avid horsewoman with a special love for animals, especially horses, throughout her lifetime. A well-read person, she was a 1932 graduate of John H. Reagan High School where she prided herself with a three-year perfect high school attendance record as well as being active in home economics and the school's choir. Accompanying her high school picture was a quotation to describe her, "Merry as the day is long." That was her spirit: one of living a Christian life, teaching God's abundant love to all who knew her, valuing the importance of an education, and making a happy point out of any difficult situation.

Visitation, 6-9 p.m., February 2, 2003, with funeral services Monday, February 3, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Garden of Memories.

For those desiring to do so, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice or West End Baptist Church Food Pantry, 802 Shepherd Dr., Houston, TX 77007, 713-862-6683. "Oh Heaven, receive an honored guest, for our blessed Mother is now allowed to rest!"
