Son of Moses CAPLAN and his wife, Ida LEVINSON.
Dr. Caplan was a graduate of Boston Latin and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His Ph.D. in mathematical physics was from Purdue University, and his law degree was from NYU. He was a patent attorney with Lucent Technology, a talented pianist, a member of the National Rifle Association's Board of Directors, a trustee for the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund, and author of many works on civil liberties and the Magna Carta.
In the words of a journalist who was also a friend of Dr. Caplan, David Caplan "was a giant in the firearms civil rights movement for which he had coined the term 'Second Amendment friendship' to include everyone, in or out of organized gun groups, who was devoted to preserving this vitally important individual right."
Dr. Caplan authored the landmark paper "Restoring the Balance: The Second Amendment Revisited," published in the Fordham Law Review in 1976. That paper attracted attention of many academics and helped to inspire scholarship and writing that continued even after Dr. Caplan's death. His final article, "Postmodernism and the Model Penal Code v. The Fourth, Fifth, and Fourteenth Amendments – and the Castle Privacy Doctrine in the Twenty-First Century," was published by the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Law in summer of 2005.
Dr. Caplan was survived by his wife of forty years.
