Drowned Has Been Identified - Found to Be Alfred E Cantrall Who Has Been Missing
While conducting a search for Alfred E. Cantrall of this city, who has been missing for the last week, Plainsclothesman Lee Foster yesterday stumbled onto the identification of the body of a man found in the Sangamon River by William Dahlkamp last Friday, June 25. Further inquiry for Cantrall had been given up when friends and relatives recovered his belongings. Alfred Cantrall, aged 40 years, the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Cantrall, of 1605 Pasfield street, disappeared more than a week ago. William S. Womack, brother-in-law, on Wednesday night appealed to the chief of police for aid in locating him and Plainsclothesman Foster went to work on the job. Provided with a photograph of Cantrall, he stopped at Kirlin & Egan's undertaking establishment yesterday and asked Ben Kirlin if he knew the picture. Kirlin had last known him as an employee of H. B. Davidson, wagon maker. The two men concluded that the picture resembled the body taken from the river, whom Kirlin & Egan had buried. Edward Egan, the other member of the firm, provided the missing link. He produced a pocket mirror advertising Louis Reisz, the tailor, and a necktie taken from the body and grasping the clue he telephoned the tailor. On receiving the confirmation that he did all the work for Cantrall the necktie was used and the identification made practically certain. No reason for Cantrall's ending his life has been advanced and it is believed that his death was the result of an accident. His mother is 80 years old.
