|Death: ||Jan. 20, 2011|
Irma Cantor, 90, died on January 20, 2011, after a long period of declining health. Born in Berlin, Germany in 1920, she escaped the Nazis, arriving in London, England in 1939. During World War II, she met Irving Cantor, an American soldier stationed in England, who brought her to Bay Shore, New York, where they were married in 1947. After many years in Bay Shore, they retired to Florida, and after Irving's death, she relocated to Asheville.
In her later years, she spent much of her time crocheting scarves, baby blankets and hats for those in need. She enjoyed looking for bargains at the local thrift stores and especially ABCCM. Friends have described her as a spark, and others have admired her bravery. She was loved by all those who came in contact with her.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Victor Fahrer of Asheville, grandson, Adam Fahrer, his wife, Monica, and their children, David and Allison, of Fairfield CT, and grandson, Jesse Fahrer and his partner, Susie of Amsterdam. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Savoca, of Mount Vernon, NY, and by her brother, Kurt Majerowicz, who perished in the holocaust with his wife and daughter.
