PEORIA - Betty L. Canterbury, 80, of Peoria passed away at 3 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, in her home at Lutheran Hillside Village.
She was born on May 26, 1929, in San Jose, Ill., to Wesley and Martha (Graf) Hilst. Betty married Jack W. Canterbury in 1952 in Peoria. Later in life, she made her home with Leonard Wolniak for 32 years. He preceded her in death, along with her parents and a brother, Kenneth Hilst.
Surviving are one son, Harry L. (Cathy) Canterbury of Tremont; and one daughter, Tricia W. Canterbury of St. Louis; and four grandchildren, Rochelle Wooten of St. Louis, William Canterbury of Tremont, currently serving in the USMC in Afghanistan, Jeff (Dawn) Canterbury of Minier and Scott Canterbury of Browning. Also surviving are a brother, Wesley (Dixie) Hilst of Havana; and one sister, Lois Sunderland of Arizona. Four great-grandchildren further survive her, along with many nieces and nephews.
In the 1950s, Betty worked as a secretary for the vice president of Caterpillar. She also was a secretary at the Peoria Cordage Company for many years. Later in life she was a Realtor for Zosky Realty in Peoria.
Betty loved gardening all of her life and belonged to the Peoria Garden Club and Central Illinois Hosta Society. Quilting was another love and she belonged to Gem's Quilting Society.
Betty volunteered at Proctor Hospital and at PAWS as a pet therapist for many years. She loved to travel, visiting many foreign countries, and also loved animals, especially Seal Point Siamese cats.
Services are Saturday, March 20, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 21819 N. County Road 3300 East in rural Manito. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m., with services at 2 p.m. at the church and burial following in Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito. Maas Funeral Home in Manito provides services.
