Thirteen years after a diagnosis of cancer, Wayne Bayard Cannon passed away peacefully at his home in Central, Washington County, Utah on Sunday, September 7, 2008.
He was born on February 4, 1922 in St. George, Utah to Aurora Jane Bracken Cannon and Bayard Cannon. He was raised in Central with his siblings: John, Max, Clara, and Ivan. He attended school in Central and St. George, going through the eighth grade. After his father's death, he cared for his mother until she passed away.
Wayne was inducted into the military during WWII on March 26, 1943 with active duty beginning April 2, 1943 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He served in the 289th Company in maintenance as a mechanic. The campaigns he served in were: Southern Philippines, Luzon, and New Guinea. His decorations and citations are: Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. He received and honorable discharge from the Army on December 22, 1945 in Fort Douglas, Utah.
He had a variety of trades: truck driver, dairy farmer, construction worker (Hoover Dam), and grounds keeper for 28 years at The Dunes golf course in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was also the grounds keeper of the Central Cemetery for many years. After retirement they moved back to Central, Utah where he kept a beautiful yard. His yard and garden received a lot of love and care. He loved to have family reunions. In recent years, with the help of his neighbors, a neighborhood party was held where he was surrounded with family and friends.
He married Ada Marie Hafen on January 9, 1971 in Ivins, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple on December 1, 1973. They are the parents of two children: Gary Wayne Cannon (Tera deceased) of Ivins, Utah and Stephanie (John) Hall of Las Vegas, Nevada. He has eight grandchildren: Teryn and Kaden Shorty, Joshua, Charlee Ann, and Josie Cannon, and Ashley, Audrey and Lauren Hall. Wayne is also survived by his sister Clara Cottam of St. George, Utah and his brother Ivan (Helen) Cannon of Las Vegas, Nevada, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers John and Max.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Veyo LDS Ward Chapel, 176 East Center Street, Veyo, UT. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 11, from 6-7 p.m., at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Boulevard, St. George, UT. and on Friday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Chapel, prior to services.
Interment will be in the Central Cemetery.
